Talon

Talon woke with a start, fully aware Ez wasn’t in the hut with him. He’d grown accustomed to sensing her presence at all times, and something felt off when she wasn’t near. It only took a second for his waking mind to find her, though, and his heartbeat calmed when he identified the animal presence with her. The whites of Taric’s eyes glowed in the darkness of the hut as he looked questioningly at his brother.

“She’s with Irelia,” Talon whispered to his older brother. He typically wasn’t the one with answers. Sure, he could tell when a camel was lame or if they were about to be attacked by buzzards, but he’d never imagined himself as a source of comfort through knowledge. Being chosen before Taric didn’t give him any satisfaction. He simply hoped that Ez would forgive his stubborn brother soon. A piece felt like it was missing from their small group.

Draven rolled over and groaned. “Aye and she has been for quite some time. I wonder what Irelia told her? Maybe she’ll be more forthcoming than that old crone.”

Abandoning all attempts at further sleep, Talon sat up. “So you think Leona was hiding things too?”

Darius spoke from the darkness, revealing he’d also been awake for some time. “I believe the elder has been hiding in the canyon too long without any knowledge. She doesn’t know any more than what has been passed down to her, and histories get convoluted during oral deliveries.”

Draven snorted. “As always, you have a diplomatic way of saying the same thing, brother.” He sat up and stretched, the pre-dawn light highlighting the planes of his muscles. Talon used to be self-conscious that he was so much leaner than his two eldest brothers, but not anymore. Ez had gifted him with confidence and peace. He’d always known a person could love more than one other, and it had surprised him to no end when he’d realized some people only take one mate. He’d seen the connection between his father and mothers. Ez loved them all effortlessly, giving each of them an equal part of her soul, time, and affection. He was certain Taric was included in that equation. There was a bond between them already; it just hadn’t been solidified.

The moment Irelia took flight, joining her mates in the sky and on the surface, Talon felt it. He wanted to travel soon. Judging by the animals he sensed on the surface, this part of the desert promised to be different than their usual route. The Wayfarer within him was excited despite their ultimate destination.

Seconds after Irelia winged away, Ez shuffled into the hut. When she stumbled and cursed, nearly all of them tried to help her navigate the near darkness.

“Having all you big brutes in my way isn’t helping that much,” she pointed out with an amused tone. “Providing light might be better.”

Talon rolled his eyes at their behavior and reached for the lantern Leona had left for them. Draven hissed and covered his face as the soft glow filled the room.
